| "Elvis" the saltwater crocodile |
Today we officially moved out of our apartment. It was a really weird feeling closing the door knowing we’d never be back. We had checked & re-checked to make sure we hadn’t left anything behind. We went down to the car park and realized “oh shit, how are we going to get out of here? We left the pass card in the apartment!” Luckily enough, someone was leaving at the same time – problem solved.
After playing Tetris with all of our belongings in our little VW Golf (whom we’ve named Ted – inside story), we were finally on the road! We had no plans at this point, we didn’t even know where we were sleeping tonight, all we knew was a general route we’d like to take around the country over the next 10 weeks – that’s the fun of it right?
Our first stop was in the Central Coast at the Australian Reptile Park. We had wanted to go to this place for a while now after seeing them on the show Bondi Vet. When we got there, the first thing we saw was a swarm of alligators waiting at the end of a plank for the keeper to hold out a piece of meat with a pair of tongs! We also saw a Tasmanian devil, koalas, dingos, kangaroos, platypus, spiders, lizards, snakes, wombats and a massive croc named “Elvis” – he was 5 metres long!
We had called our proposed camping site earlier in the day (at Bouddi National Park) but there was no answer, so we drove there anyways. We checked out Putty beach and Little beach and they had nice campsites close to the water. However, they were all full and we were told you must book weeks in advance (accompanied with a laugh). So we kept driving...a couple hours later we still didn’t know exactly where we were. We had typed in ‘hostel’ into the GPS, and it ended up taking us to an aged care facility. So we ended up hopping a fence into a nearby caravan park.
Day 1 lesson learned: Book in advance during peak season.
