We headed down to Alligator Creek early this morning for a peaceful swim as there still wasn’t anyone else around. Once others started to show up, we got into the car and made our way to catch the ferry to Magnetic Island – where there is over 320 days of sunshine a year! After arrival, we made a slight misjudgement in distance, and carried all of our belongings for what seemed like forever to reach our campsite. It was very hot and we were dripping sweat.
Carrying all of our bags around is definitely harder than having the luxury of driving from one destination to the other, but we’re roughing it out here. We spent the rest of the day lying on the beach. We took full advantage of the “stinger nets” they have set up here as the opportunity to swim at the beaches are fewer and fewer because of the dangerous jellies in Far North Queensland. We went on a short but steep walk to a lookout that had a great viewpoint of all Maggie’s surrounding bays and beaches. It’s the perfect spot for a sunrise or sunset (we’ll see if we can make it up there tomorrow morning).
We both felt like true backpackers today. Each of us packed a bag and carried our tent and food to the terminal, and left Ted behind. Now, after leaving our apartment, Ted has become our new home base, but now Ted is still in Townsville and we really don’t feel like we have a home base anymore. But it’s another new experience and we love the spontaneity of it all.
