Turtle Power

We were quick to pack-up and hit the road for two reasons this morning, firstly we had 1000+ km to cover over the next 3 days, and secondly, we needed to get to Tin Can Bay to feed some wild dolphins their brekky! We got there at 8am, just in time to stand in line to buy two fish each to feed the dolphins. However, there was a very smart (and quick) bird, who knew what he was doing, and the second that Willy let his guard down, the bird stole his fish out of the little bucket and ate it whole! This bird was so persistent that it was actually stealing fish out of the dolphin’s mouth as people were feeding them. We both ended up feeding the dolphins and it was really fun to get up close to them. Done check! So down the road we went. We both weren’t feeling 100% from the previous night, so we decided to stop in a little historic town called Maryborough for some coffee and scones – delicious! Feeling a lot better, we continued up the road a few more kilometres, and spotted a peanut van – a must stop. We grabbed some ginger and honey peanuts and then putz’d further up the coast. As we passed through Bundaberg (aka Bundy) we saw a sign for the hospital and decided it would be a good chance to get Willy’s cast changed.

Four hours later, it was off with the old and stinky, white turned yellow cast to a shiny new red one. We hit up the Bundaberg Ginger beer factory, and left with a 6 pack of assorted flavours. On the way out of Bundaberg, we thought it would be neat to visit Mon Repos – a turtle rookery. At this time of year, turtle hatchlings emerge in the evenings from the cool sand, and are guided by the moonlight to make a mad dash for the ocean. As there is so much glow from surrounding communities, the turtles get
confused. We were lucky enough to be selected to take part in guiding the hatchlings by using flashlights to form a light tunnel down to the water. It was really a once in a lifetime experience to see this event take place.
